Betta fish, known as Splendens, are originally from Siam. They were bread for the purpose of fighting other fish. These little warriors are tropical freshwater fish. They can handle warmer water temperatures than most fish. Temperatures ranging between 70-80 degrees Fahrenheit are normal for Betta Splendens. Cooler temperatures can actually harm these fish.
These fish can come in many different colors. In fact, you can breed fish until a desired color is achieved. In most cases, Betta’s are bright, and beautiful. However, there are some of which most people would call ugly. So, how do you care for these fish once you have purchased one of your own? Here’s what you need to do:
First off, it would be wise to purchase a large size tank. In most cases, people will put their fish in a fish bowl. Do not do this. This can cause your pet to die prematurely. Instead, put them in a large size tank. A five gallon tank should be good enough.
Second, the water should be free of contaminants. Using tap water can be dangerous if the proper precautions aren’t taken. Be sure to let the water sit over night before exposing your fish to it. This will ensure that any additives are eliminated from the water. You can also purchase a water additive that will do the same thing. This product will ensure that the PH levels are at the proper setting.
Third, the location of your tank should be taken into consideration also. Placing your tank in direct sunlight can cause the water temperatures to change rapidly. This can harm your little friend. Look for a location that is secluded. Otherwise, your family room will be good enough. Be sure to cover your tank so that your cats don’t get to curious about your new friend. Plants can be good for shade and comfort. Be sure to avoid hard plastics though.
Finally, purchase the proper food. Betta fish are not used to eating often. In fact, it would be wise to feed them less often. Feeding them too often can actually kill them. A good rule of thumb to stick to would be once every other day.
