Goldfish is one of the most popular fishes for aquarium. Perhaps it is because they are inexpensive and can live for years. Today, with the help of new methods and technologies such as mixed breeding, there are various types of goldfishes available in the market whre many come with very attractive colors.
However, although goldfish can be kept in an aquarium, What is not realized by many people is they should not be kept in goldfish bowl. The main reason is this type of tank will make the fish experience the difficulty in respiration due to the decreased water surface area provides lesser oxygen. Being kept in such a container, they also tend to die very quickly because of ammonia or nitrite poisoning.
You should keep in mind that goldfish will eat whatever food given to them. This means the water will be intoxicated very quickly with their feces as well as the chemicals released from their gills. The water surface area should be large enough because the larger it is, the more oxygen will diffuse. As a rule, water surface should be one square foot for each inch of fish’s length.
To increase the amount of oxygen in the water, aquatic plants may be added. Along with that, you can also aerate the water with the help of filter or water pump.
Besides the water surface ares, another important thing that must be thinked about is the depth of the water. Make sure the water level is deep enough to avoid the water becomes freeze in winter.
The goldfish can grow up to twenty-three inches and can weigh up to ten pounds. One medium sized goldfish need minimum of ten gallons of water.
